PATHWAYS TO FREEDOM: MAROON SOCIETIES IN THE AMERICAS
About the Exhibit
The Pathways to Freedom: Maroon Societies in the Americas exhibit will serve as the nexus for a year-long schedule of programming and discussions about the significance of Mexico to the African diaspora communities from 1800 to the present. This exhibit will address the historic lack of information and programming in San Diego relating to the Afro-Mexican experience and the relationship between San Diego’s African American and African diaspora communities to Mexico. It will also raise awareness and understanding of current issues and cultural realities of the Black Seminole Indians and the Mascogos in the Texas and Mexico region.
In addition to the 40-foot long physical exhibit and programs, the Pathways to Freedom project will include original bilingual podcasts, videos and online presentations to extend the international digital footprint of the African American and African Diaspora Museum.
